Bedtime routines are more than just a way to help your child transition to sleep. They are also an opportunity to bond with your child and establish healthy sleep habits. As a baby and child sleep consultant, I recognize the importance of a calming bedtime routine in promoting healthy sleep habits. Below are some tips for a bedtime routine I use at home that will help your child wind down and embrace a night of restful sleep.
Start with Consistency:
A consistent bedtime routine is critical to ensuring success. Establish a predictable pattern, including a consistent bedtime, to regulate your child's internal clock. Consistency is key to providing children with a sense of security, signalling that it's time to move from the day's activities to a peaceful night's rest.
Set the Stage with a Calming Environment:
To create the perfect environment for a good night's sleep, start by dimming the lights as bedtime approaches. Soft, warm lighting can help stimulate the production of melatonin, the hormone that induces sleep. Additionally, consider using blackout curtains to eliminate any external light or noise, and foster a peaceful, tranquil atmosphere.
Bath Time Bliss:
Incorporating a warm, soothing bath into your child's bedtime routine can be a calming sensory experience that prepares them for a peaceful night's sleep. Choose gentle, calming bath products and add a few drops of lavender essential oil, known for its relaxation-inducing properties. This sensory ritual helps with the physical transition to bedtime and provides a delightful bonding moment for both parent and child.
Pyjama Parade:
Preparing for bed can be a fun and interactive experience for you and your kids. Let your child pick out their favourite pair of pyjamas to make it a special ritual, boosting their confidence and adding some excitement to their routine. Choose sleepwear that's comfortable and appropriate for the season, ensuring that they'll have a cosy and peaceful night's sleep.
Expert Tip - some kids are more sensitive, so remove any tags from their pyjamas.
Wind Down with a Story or Lullaby:
Transitioning from a busy day to a peaceful night of sleep can be difficult. However, engaging in calming activities before bedtime can help. Reading a book or singing a lullaby together are great options that can help you relax. Choose stories and melodies with soothing themes to create a sense of tranquillity.
Limit Screen Time:
It's essential to limit screen time to at least two hours before bedtime. The blue light emitted by screens can disrupt melatonin production, making it difficult for your child to fall asleep. Instead, opt for calming activities that don't require a screen to promote relaxation.
Create a Relaxing Bedtime Playlist:
Have you considered curating a playlist of calming and gentle music to be played during your child's bedtime routine? Music has the power to influence mood, and incorporating soft melodies can signal to your child that it's time to rest. Experiment with different genres to discover what works best for your little one.
Practice Mindful Breathing or Meditation for Toddlers:
It's important to encourage mindfulness and meditation in children of all ages. Simple exercises such as focusing on their breath or visualizing calming scenes can help alleviate any tension from the day and promote relaxation for better sleep.
Offer Comfort Objects:
For many children, finding solace in a cherished stuffed animal, blanket, or special toy is a comforting experience. Integrating these items into their bedtime routine creates a sense of familiarity, promoting a relaxed and serene state of mind.
Just note that soft toys are only recommended after 12 months by the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) and they should also not contain buttons or parts that can become loose and become a choking hazard.
Be Mindful of Timing:
Timing is crucial when it comes to routines – especially bedtime routines. Make sure to allocate enough time for each step, avoiding the urge to rush through them. A smooth, seamless routine helps create a calming atmosphere in the bedroom, while stressed or hurried transitions can easily disrupt it.
For babies younger than 12 months set aside 30-45min for the routine and for toddlers 45-60min.
Building Lasting Sleep Habits:
In the midst of everyday chaos, a well-crafted bedtime routine can provide a much-needed haven of tranquillity for both parents and children. Consistently incorporating calming elements into your nightly ritual not only signals to your little ones that it's time to sleep but also establishes healthy sleep habits that will benefit them in the long run. Investing in a soothing bedtime routine is a gift that will keep on giving, promoting a positive relationship with sleep and paving the way for peaceful nights and energized mornings.
